I am from Louisville, KY, but I've lived all over the place from Mississippi, the Caribbean, and of course Kentucky! I had moved a total of seven times! I am in my junior year as a Child and Family Psychology major and minoring in American Sign Language. I am a member of National Residence Hall Honorary, a Mental Health Peer Advocate, and I am a Resident Advisor in Sullivan. I have enjoyed learning about Deaf culture and and ASL for the past year and a half. I have such a deep Deaf culture and although I have been hesitance when it comes to communicating with Deaf people and attending events, but this semester I want to become more involved in the community!

Tess Lakins Introduction

Hello! My name is Tess Lakin and I am a junior at EKU! I am currently in the Pre Communications Disorders program and hope to get into the actual program next semester! I am from Pikeville, Ky but I live here in Richmond with my uncle, aunt, and their daughter. I am the oldest of three children, I have two younger brothers (17 and 15) and a doggie who I love very much. I first became interested in special education and speech therapy because of my work with foster children and various other children with disabilities. I went to Pikeville High School, they really embraced their special education program and worked hard to make sure every student achieved their goals. I loved the environment and the people who made it special.

Introduction

Hi, I'm Cassidy Turner. I am majoring in DHH Middle Grades with a concentration in English. I am from a really small town where everyone knows everyone and I had never really interacted with anyone who was deaf. (To give you an idea of how small- I graduated high school with 13 other students) When I was in sixth grade a student who was deaf transferred to our school and our teacher taught us some signs and even after the student moved away ASL really stuck with me and kept me interested. This is what made me want to explore a career in becoming a DHH teacher because I have always known that I want to be a teacher.

Welcome to Spring Educating the Deaf & Hard of Hearing Class Blog

Welcome to the Class Blog!  This is where you as students will be asked to share connections between course materials and what you are learning in other classes, what you might see in social media related to deafness or your own experiences and questions.  To get started please take a minute to introduce yourself and a connection or two you have to this course, or why you are taking this course.

One personal connection I have is my son, who is now 33, is Deaf and coaches varsity basketball at the Mississippi School for the Deaf.  You may have recently seen a video that went viral of him coaching or a segment that the CBS Evening News did on him in December.  YES!  I am one proud mama!!

I look forward to reading your introductions and connections!

Introduction

Hello, my name is Gabrielle Emmons. I am a sophomore, majoring in communication disorders with a minor in American Sign Language. I am from a very small town in northeastern Kentucky so I was never really exposed to diversity until I attended the Governor's Scholar Program and when I came to college. I completely fell in love with learning American Sign Language, as well as Deaf culture. This is a topic I am very passionate about and I look forward to learning so much in this course.

Maggie Woods's Introduction

Hi! My name is Maggie Woods. I'm a freshman who is majoring in DHH Elementary Education from Georgetown, Kentucky. When I was eight years old, I was diagnosed with an ear tumor that left me moderately to severely hard of hearing in both of my ears. I was raised by a hearing family in a hearing world so I didn't have much exposure to anyone who was going through the same things that I was and I always saw my disability as something negative. During my high school years, my mother suggested that we go to a convention for those who were D/deaf and hard of hearing. I met so many people who understood my story and what it felt like to go through the same things I'd gone through. I finally felt like I wasn't alone and realized that my disability wasn't something to be ashamed of, but rather embraced. Since then, I have tried to find more ways to interact with the community. I'm taking this class and this major so that one day I could hopefully teach at a school for the deaf and help students understand that being deaf or hard of hearing is not something to be ashamed of.

Introduction

My name is Jake LaFramboise and I am majoring in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education with a concentration in Middle Grade Social Studies and a minor in ASL. I have known for the longest time that I wanted to be a teacher (since kindergarten actually), but I could not decide what field I wanted to go into. Initially, I was going to go into LBD and get a minor in ASL (as I have an interest in learning about ASL). Then, I saw posts about deaf education and the need for professionals the field had and I decided that doing Deaf Education would best fit my interest to educate those who need better teachers. I am excited to be in this course and have heard great things about it!

Introduction

Hello all, my name is Kennedi Fields! I am a psychology major and a special education minor. ASL and the deaf community in general has always sparked my interest, so when I saw that this class was available I was excited to take it. I can't wait to learn more about this subject and work with everybody in here!

Introduction Blog

Hi, my name is Lauren Knipp and I am taking this course because I am pursuing a minor in ASL. I had honestly never met someone who was D/deaf or hard of hearing until I came to college. I worked with adults with special needs in high school, and my favorite adult to work with relied on ASL to communicate so that is what sparked my interest in ASL, which led me to this course!
